Film & Television Secondary Application

Thank you for your interest in CU Denver’s Film and Television BFA program! This secondary application is required for all Film & Television Program applicants except for those who were previous Film & TV Program students. In addition to completing this secondary application, all applicants must also apply and be admitted to CU Denver. It is recommended that applicants apply to CU Denver before completing this secondary application but these two requirements can be completed in any order.

The Film & Television Department faculty will review applications once per month and applicants will be notified once an admission decision has been made. The faculty will be evaluating this secondary film application in two ways: 1) Examples of work you’ve created and 2) A written essay in which you evaluate a film made by others. Only complete applications will be considered. Both Parts I and II must be completed.

Please note that having no filmmaking experience will not disqualify you. We welcome all applicants. What is important is how well you think about images and story. We are looking for critical thinking and filmmaking potential. If you’ve never made a film or written a script, please choose 1b, ‘still images.’

For Fall Semester applicants, the secondary application early deadline is January 1st and the regular deadline is May 1st. We also have a late application deadline of July 1st. Fall Semester applicants applying after July 1st will be considered on a space-available and case-by-case basis. For Spring Semester applicants, the secondary application deadline is January 10th.

Please send any questions about this application to CAMinfo@ucdenver.edu.

Part I.

For Part I, please choose option A, B, or C below. Applicants only need to complete one of these options.

A) Film or Video - Please upload a video of a film that you had a part in creating. We will only consider videos up to five minutes in length. If the film is longer than five minutes, select the best five minutes that you want us to view. Clearly identify what role you had in creating this video. Did you write it? Direct it? Edit it? Be very specific.

Note: We can only accept links to videos. Please post your video online using Vimeo, YouTube, Google Drive or some other site that allows you to link to your video.

Use prompts from above.

B) Still images - If you choose this option, please upload 5 to 8 still images that you’ve taken. These can be pictures from your phone or from a high-end camera. The camera you shot them on is not important. What is important is that the images mean something to you. They say, “every picture tells a story,” so what story are your images telling? For each one, please provide a well-written artist’s statement. An artist’s statement should clearly identify the thought process in designing the image and your understanding of the meaning or emotion evoked by that image. We recommend that each artist statement is at least 2 paragraphs in length. Avoid using language like “I thought it looked cool” or “the image speaks for itself.” Really think about why you are proud of the image and what about it resonates with your tastes on art. Is it the composition? Lighting? Mood? Characters? What is the story??

Part II.

Here’s a link to a short film called Tuileries from the anthology film by the Coen BrothersParis, je t'aime (2006) https://youtu.be/ZboPHxiJMsc

Write a one page essay evaluating the filmmakers use of image and sound to tell the story. This is not a review, so we are not interested in whether you liked the film. Nor are we looking for you to retell the story of the film. This is an opportunity for you to think about the craft of filmmaking. How did the filmmakers use image, sound and editing to make this film? Discuss what techniques employed were or were not effective?

Upload your answer if you wrote in a word document instead.
